10 Kitchen Christmas Decorating Ideas

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and I can’t imagine that it’s ever more true than during the holidays…Between Christmas baking, hungry visitors, and holiday feasts – not to mention regular meals – I definitely spend more time in the kitchen than any other room this time of year. So why not make it festive? This year I added magnolia garland and other greens to Little Pax Ranch for a simple, cheerful Christmas kitchen.

Seriously, the living room usually gets all the glory when it comes to holiday decorating… but I think we could all benefit from some good kitchen Christmas decorating ideas. How to Decorate your Kitchen for Christmas

There are so many things you could do in your kitchen to bring in holiday cheer, but it’s important that this hard-working room remain functional, too! So be careful that whatever you do it doesn’t hinder you from using the space. Here are some Christmas kitchen decor ideas that won’t get in your way.

GARLAND OVER THE SINK

Whether you have a window or just a wall above your sink, adding garland above creates a beautiful focal point without getting in your way. Who knows, it might even make dishwashing more fun? ???? I added some magnolia garland above the farm sink for a little farmhouse Christmas feel at the ranch.

A large Christmas tree on the floor would certainly be in the way in this kitchen, but a mini tree on top of the island or a kitchen table is the perfect focal point. I picked up two of these last year at Hobby Lobby, and they’ve been much used and loved!

FESTIVE DISH TOWELS

I found the one I’m using last year and love the rich greens . You need dish towels anyway, right? Might as well let them add to the celebration.

STAIRWELL OR DOORWAY GARLAND

I realize that not everyone has a stair banister in the kitchen, but you could achieve the same effect with a doorway leading into the space. Garland, especially substantial ones like this beautiful faux magnolia leaf garland, makes such a huge impact with very little effort. Just attach to the banister using floral wire, fluff the magnolia leaves, and enjoy!

MINI LED LIGHT STRANDS

These copper wire Christmas Lights are one of my all-time favorite holiday decorations. Battery powered, they are perfect for shelves, bowls, vases, and more!

COORDINATING KITCHEN RUNNER

See the rug? I’ve been collecting vintage rugs lately, and this one landed in our back hall. But I thought the muted greens would go better with the green and white color palette I was going for in this space than the vintage runner I normally have here, so I swapped them.

Just to be clear, I’m not recommending a new runner with a giant Santa (unless that’s your thing), nor am I recommending going out to buy a new kitchen rug just for the holidays… but I do think it’s helpful to consider whether something you have would be a better fit with your Christmas kitchen ideas than whatever you normally have in front of your sink.

GREENERY CLIPPINGS

In the Texas hill country, we have tons of cedars, so it was easy at the ranch to just step outside and clip some ~12″ pieces. But if you live in the city, try places that sell Christmas trees. They’ll often have clippings they’ll either sell or give you. Clippings are fun because they bring a fresh smell and can be placed on just about any counter, shelf, or table without getting too much in the way. They are also easy to stick in a vase with water to rehydrate them, if needed.

OVERSIZED WREATHS

As I said to the guy at the burger place this week when I ordered double meat, “Go big or go home, right?” ???? But really, I love a good statement wreath, and the holidays are the perfect time to indulge. Plus, as a bonus, an oversized wreath in an adjoining room (like the dining room) can be seen from the kitchen without taking up working space.

HANGING BELLS

This string of bells is one of my favorites. I’ve used it for tablescapes, wreaths, and wall art. But hanging on the knob of the front door is a quick and easy addition to the space.

SIMPLE COLOR PALETTE

Remember the goal in the kitchen is to make the room feel festive without hindering the functionality of this hard-working space. And simplicity always allows less to be more. A clean island makes the mini tree stand out, for example.

I even put away some the blue vases I had on the shelves in the dining room so that the greenery would pop against the simple black and white plates and dishes. It’s amidst simplicity that the holiday festivities shine.
